Thoughts from the Caribbean
Choices, choices, choices...... What do you do when faced with a huge choice? Do you stick to what you know, choosing the same option every time? Or, do you try new things and see where it takes you?
Here in the Caribbean having a break and on a nightly basis we’re faced with a huge choice of drinks (at least 5 different types of rum!!!). I realise this is a typical 1st world problem and really not a hardship! But, it does serve a timely reminder that making new choices and trying out new options can sometimes be very rewarding :-)

Switching off…..does anyone else find that they never quite switch off from their job? Not in a stressed, overwork kind of way but because they live and breathe their work and profession?
Whilst away on holiday I have really chilled out and will be coming back home feeling recharged. But, whilst away, I just couldn't stop thinking those HR thoughts......
noticing the even male / female split in all job roles around the resort including housekeeping, bar, restaurant, chefs, reception, no roles seem to be particularly gender specific
referencing the resourcing adage of "recruit the attitude, train the job" whilst watching the (overly) enthusiastic animation and entertainment team at the resort!
considering the rostering challenges of two restaurants, a snack bar and five bars
wondering if tips given by guests were being included in minimum wage calculations and remembering the EU Directive wouldn't apply!! And, then wondering what wage legislation was in place......

Colour in the world……it will be a surprise to some but we've had some less than sunny weather during our holiday here in the Caribbean, including a couple of very windy and cloudy days (as per this image) and some real downpours. Unlike a few of the other guests at the hotel, I've not seen the down side of this weather but, instead, seen this as a necessary requirement for the fabulous greenery and colourful flowers we see everywhere on this island.
And this is the same for life and work.....you sometimes need some unpleasantness or tough times to make the good times better and to really appreciate the colour in the world rather than just a bland grey everywhere!
So, if you are an HR leader and want a no obligation chat about your improved the colour in your team or organisation with some process improvement and/or HR projects, get in touch with me at CG Pro-Active HR.
